Pinellas County, Florida -- The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office has announced the termination of three deputies and one sergeant for "extreme loafing and idling."
Sheriff Gualtieri says the deputies concealed their cruisers, disconnected their agency required GPS and left their assigned areas to go home, visit family, or idle in other areas.
They did respond to calls, but did not initiate action for hours at a time. One, the sheriff says, even watched a movie while working.
The fired deputies and the sergeant are listed below:
- Deputy Kenneth L. Burroughs, 42, hired Oct. 1, 1996
- Deputy Robert G. Harmer, 42, hired June 10, 1990
- Deputy Robert G. Harmer, 42, hired May 2, 1994
- Sergeant Christopher W. Metro, 43, hired Jan. 13, 1991
Two other deputies received suspensions:
- Deputy Brian Clark, 40, hired April 27, 1998
- Robert J. Wojciechowski, 46, Dec. 1, 1986
"These deputies by their intentional actions essentially cheated the taxpayers out of well over $24,600 during the time of the investigation - which was from July 1, 2011 to December 31, 2011.," says Sheriff Gualtieri. "We believe our findings are a snapshot of what was going on for a longer period of time. This is behavior that will not be tolerated, and they are being held accountable."
