Clearwater Marine Aquarium lends helping hand to sea turtle

Clearwater, Florida -- On Valentine’s Day, 2012, an employee of St. Augustine Ecotours happened upon a juvenile Green Sea Turtle which was taken to the Marine Science Center in Volusia County. After being struck by a boat which left blue paint on her severely damaged carapace and cracked plastron, this little girl affectionately became known as “Labatt.”

Pinellas County, Florida -- The season reclaimed water restrictions for Pinellas County reclaimed water customers will begin on Monday, April 1.

These reductions help avoid reclaimed water shortages during Florida’s traditional dry seasons which is April to June and October to November.

From April 1 to June 30, irrigation with reclaimed water supplied by Pinellas County is limited to three days per week, based on the resident's home address. The mandatory seasonal restrictions state:

Clearwater Beach, Florida - Sea turtle nesting is the theme of the latest program in the educational "Making Waves" series at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

Research Biologist Kelly Martin of the Loggerhead Marinelife Center of Juno Beach will be the keynote presenter. She will talk about current studies of leatherneck sea turtle nesting, tagging and tracking programs in Palm Beach County.

Clearwater Beach, Florida -- An otter raised on a boat as a pup and unable to return to the wild now will live out his years at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

Walle, a North American River Otter, will join two other otters, Cooper and Oscar, under the care of the aquarium's training team, CMA said last week.

His caretaker raised him on a boat from the time he was a pup, CMA said, but when he became a juvenile is was obvious he needed more intense care and could not resume life as a normal otter.

Clearwater Beach, Florida -- The Sandpearl Resort on Clearwater Beach will host a fundraiser next month for the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

"Winter on the Beach" includes dinner stations, a live band, dancing and an auction of jewels, artistic pieces and a private yacht charter.

The formal attire event will be held at 6:30 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 8.

Clearwater Beach, Florida -- The Clearwater Marine Aquarium has scheduled a seminar at the beach library to explain its work with the rescue, rehabilitation and release of dolphins, sea turtles and other marine animals.

The session is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 1:30 p.m.

Clearwater Beach, Florida - A rehabilitated loggerhead sea turtle, found emaciated and unable to dive well off Honeymoon Island last June, was returned to the gulf Tuesday morning.

The Clearwater Marine Aquarium says the turtle, named Drew, weighed 105 pounds when rescued, now weighs 135 pounds and has overcome her buoyancy problem.

"Clearwater Marine Aquarium's Sea Turtle team has had a very busy year," according to spokesperson Krista Rosado. "The team located a record-breaking 200 nests on 26 miles of patrolled Pinellas County beaches."
